Honouring Remembrance: A Heartfelt Thank You from Wimborne Care Home

BACK TO NEWS

At Mobility at Sea, we are privileged to support individuals and organisations who go above and beyond to honour and care for others.

Recently, we received a deeply touching letter from Nikki Shepherd at Wimborne Care Home, expressing gratitude for our assistance during a very special event: the Remembrance Parade at the Cenotaph on Hayling Island.

The letter speaks volumes about the spirit of community, compassion, and respect for our veterans. It recounts the challenges faced in organising transport and support for 18 residents - many of whom are mobile veterans without their own wheelchairs - and how, together with Cavendish Health Care, we were able to help make their attendance possible.

This year marks the 80th anniversary of the end of World War II, and being part of the parade was a moment of profound significance for the residents. We are honoured to have played a small role in helping them pay their respects in person.

Below is the full letter from Nikki, which we share with her kind permission. It’s a beautiful reminder of what can be achieved when people come together with kindness and purpose.

"Dear Ali,

A letter of Grateful Thanks.

‘Build it and they will Come’.

‘Leap and the Net will Appear’.

‘Ask and the answer could be ‘yes’’. These are phrases I love but they rarely come true so demonstrably as last Sunday.

To take 18 of our beloved Wimborne residents to attend the Remembrance Parade to the Cenotaph on Hayling was never going to be the most straightforward of excursions. Too far for even our most mobile to walk, we needed help for transportation and we needed kind strong arms and legs to facilitate any wheelchair loans. You so kindly offered your help. Then as the day drew near the forecast changed and showers were forecast, the cry went up for additional support; rain shields. Once again you came to our aid.

Ali, from the first moment we connected, you and your team at Mobility at Sea (and the kind and generous help also from Cavendish Mobility) have sought to help us and for this we are so very grateful.

Without ‘Mobility at Sea’ we simply could not have taken those individuals so keen to personally pay their respects on the 80th anniversary of the end of World War 2.

We are a Veteran Friendly Home and this is a responsibility we wear with pride. Thank you for helping us provide that help on the day for so many of our mobile veterans (hence why they don’t have their own wheelchairs). We were delighted that on the day the weather did hold, despite BBC negative weather expectations.

We were part of the Hayling parade, our convoy to it had some appreciative toots!, and residents were invited to be at the front of the presentation. There has been much local coverage and I am sending several emails with a number of photos taken from the day. If you see others on our Facebook page that others have posted please let me know and I will send others as required.

All chairs and rain covers are ready for collection, please advise, thank you.

With huge appreciation and Kind Regards"

We would like to extend our heartfelt thanks to Wimborne Care Home for inviting us to be part of such a meaningful Remembrance event. It was an honour to support their residents in attending the parade and paying tribute to those who served.

We’re also delighted that this special occasion received recognition in the Portsmouth News, which featured the incredible efforts of Wimborne Care Home residents during the Remembrance Parade. You can read their coverage here.
